Latin Quotes for iPad

Latin +

Latin Phrases +

A simple, beautiful way to dive into the world of Latin wisdom: Latin Phrases + presents timeless quotes from great Latin writers against a background of other Augustus or the Colosseum. There's a wide variety of quotes to choose from, and you can whizz through them by tapping anywhere on the screen.

Pros: Looks great; works on iPad and iPhone.

Cons: Can't share quotes.

SPQR Latin Dictionary and Reader

SPQR Latin Dictionary and Reader

For those with more cash to spend, SPQR includes all of the Latin Phrases + app described above, plus its other features. That means you get all the same quotes, placed attractively against a background of Augustus or the Colosseum. However, SPQR adds the much-missed ability to share the quote either in Latin or English - just tap the share button and you can choose to tweet it or copy it to your pasteboard for use in other apps.

Pros: Looks great; works on iPad and iPhone.

Cons: None.

Latin Wisdom

Latin Wisdom

Unlike the other apps here, Latin Wisdom aims itself at a younger market - that means brighter colours and a cartoon Roman centurion are the first things you notice. It has a good selection of quotes, although many are very short as a result of them being mottos rather than quotes. Still, it's free, so it's hard to complain!

If the developer ever does another update — it's been almost two years since the last update — we'd like to see iPad support.

Pros: Free!

Cons: Doesn't work on iPad; not the most attractive.

Latin Phrases

Latin Phrases

This app offers a large collection of family mottoes, mixed in with some famous phrases and other quotations from the past. While it's easily the plainest app on offer, it does at least feel comprehensive — you can even search for quotes in Latin or English.

While there is an iPad version, it just feels like a stretched version of the iPhone interface, which is disappointing. Still, at this price it's acceptable.

Pros: Searchable list of quotes.

Cons: Boring to use; iPad interface is poor.

Best Latin Quotes

Another early entrant into the Latin apps market, and another casualty: this app has - or at least had - promise, having a nice interface and a good selection of quotes. But it hasn't been updated in three years, which means it doesn't support retina iPhone, it has no iPad interface (retina or otherwise), and doesn't support basic features such as fast app switching.

With only a little effort from the developers this could be a great app once more - come on, guys!

Pros: None.

Cons: It's dead. Avoid it.

1400 Latin Expressions

Yet another piece of Latin abandonware on the App Store: this app, while it had promise, hasn't received an update in over two years, which means it's hard if not impossible to recommend unless you're happy taking the risk of no support. The handful of features it does have are replicated elsewhere, and better; it's only real advantage is the large collection of quotes it presents - it blends mottoes, sayings, phrases, quotes and more.

As far as we're concerned, this app is unsupported and as a result we can't recommend it. There isn't even an iPad version!

Pros: None.

Cons: It's dead. Avoid it.
