Ancient Greek for iPad and iPhone

Ancient Greek

Although Greek doesn't have quite the student following as Latin, there are still some great apps out there - and this is arguably the most comprehensive you'll find. It follows a similar formula to SPQR, so you get famous Greek quotes, literature in Greek and English, a searchable copy of the Liddell, Scott and Jones Greek lexicon, word clouds and more.

Although clearly it doesn't have as many features as SPQR, Ancient Greek still comes packed with lots of reading material that will prove invaluable for any serious Greek student. It also retains the key ability to be able to transfer between Greek and English as you read, which makes it ideal if you want to get through some of the more complicated Greek works.

Pros: The most comprehensive Greek app on the App Store.

Cons: Doesn't have SPQR's full range of features.

Mythology for iPad and iPhone

This app doesn't teach Latin, but it does bring the classical world to life in a way you've never seen before! It takes 10 of the most well-known Greek myths — Pandora's Box, the flight of Icarus, King Midas and his golden touch, and more – and retells them in modern English. It then adds in jaw-dropping artwork from award-winning artist Gonzalo Ordóñez Arias and a dramatic instrumental soundtrack to produce something that's truly atmospheric.

However, the app doesn't stop there: when the user has read through each story, they can play one of three games that helps re-enforce what they've learned, and they can earn Game Center achievements as they play.

In addition to all this, Mythology is a universal app with a simplified version for iPhone use - you get the stories and the pictures for the times when your iPad isn't around. In short, if you're teaching or learning about mythology, this app will really help bring it all to life while boosting what you remember.

Pros: Utterly astonishing graphics and sound; a really polished app.

Cons: None.

Virgil out Loud for iPad and iPhone

Virgil Out Loud

This free app takes four passages from Virgil's Aeneid, and reads them back to you in Latin as you follow along with the text. Yes, that sounds rather simple, because it is rather simple, but it works really well – not many students get to hear Latin read out to the very highest standards, and even experienced Latin teachers will be impressed by the clear pronunciation and the accurate metrical approach.

To add extra educational value, the app introduces each passage with some contextual information: where are we in the story, and what are the interesting bits of Latin to look out for? And that's about it. Could it do more? Sure, we'd love to see more passages, and we'd love to see more authors too. But it's free, so it's hard to complain!

Pros: Accurate pronunciation, easy to use, and free.

Cons: None.
